10 Misconceptions About Thailand Held by Foreigners

Yawn.  Here we go again.  Do us all a favor and DO YOUR RESEARCH before you come to Thailand.  Here are 10 things newbies misunderstand when coming to Thailand for the first time.

  1. No, not everybody comes to Thailand to take drugs and hang out on Koh Samui or Koh Phuket.
  2. No, not everybody understood your rapid fire English slang or strange accent.  Slow down, breath, smile, and try again with a bit of humility.
  3. No, its not cheap anymore.  While some things remain reasonable, Thailand has developed quickly and many items are now on par with western countries.  We do not tip in Thailand BTW.
  4. No, Thai culture is not about "anything goes."  You will quickly find that Thailand is actually a very conservative country.  Get out of Soi Cowboy for a change.
  5. No, locals DO NOT typically use Tuk Tuks.  Those are reserved for newbie tourists wanting a quick thrill.  And, they're dangerous.  Stay off the motorbikes too by the way, or you'll need good insurance and a hospital.
  6. No, that Thai smile does not mean that we like you.  We are just being polite.  We might actually be plotting to stab you in the back somehow if you get out of line regarding our culture and belief system. You'll never know it though.
  7. No, not all Thai massages come with happy endings.  Know the difference.
  8. No, I do not want you to touch me anywhere, we just met and your aggresive physical interaction with me is making everyone uncomfortable.  Especially when you throw your arms around my shoulders and man handle me if you playful "western" style.  Back up.
  9. No, not everyone is corrupt; you should though go into any business or real estate deal heads up and with proper due diligence.  Make sure you have a trustworthy team behind you.
  10. No, raising your voice and gesturing wildly won't make any difference.  If you're wrong, you're wrong.  Just admit it, calm down, and we will work together with you in a calm manner to fix the situation.
