50 Things Not to do in Thai Bars & Clubs

Not a week goes by that we don't see another foreigner in trouble with Thai police because of a nightlife issue.  Even worse, we often see foreigners being assaulted and seriously hurt by nighttime security "guards."  Do not let this happen to you.  Below, 50 things you need to take to heart regarding nightlife in Thailand.  Enjoy your time responsibly but humbly.

🔞 Legal & Safety Issues

  1. Do NOT do drugs – Thailand has strict drug laws. Possession can lead to long prison sentences or even the death penalty in some cases.
  2. Don’t assume prostitution is legal – Despite appearances, it’s illegal in Thailand. Getting involved can result in fines, arrest, or blackmail.
  3. Do NOT take drinks from strangers – Drink spiking (for robbery or worse) does happen in tourist areas.
  4. Never leave your drink unattended – Always watch your drink being made and keep it with you.
  5. Don’t carry your passport to clubs – Carry a copy or a digital version, not the original, in case of theft or loss.
  6. Do NOT resist police checks – If the police ask for ID or conduct a search, comply calmly. Arguing can escalate quickly.
  7. Avoid underage clubs – Some bars employ underage staff. Being caught with them can land you in very serious legal trouble.
  8. Don’t accept street drugs from touts – Some may be working with police to entrap foreigners.
  9. Avoid overly intoxicated behavior – Drunken disorderly conduct is a criminal offense and can result in arrest or fines.
  10. Don’t get into fights – Street fights, especially involving locals, can turn violent and attract police attention. Foreigners are often blamed regardless.

💸 Scams & Financial Traps

  1. Don’t flash cash or valuables – You’ll become a target for theft or scams.
  2. Avoid “too good to be true” deals – Whether it’s a girl, drink deal, or tour – it’s probably a scam.
  3. Don’t run a bar tab you can’t pay – Some bars inflate prices or add mysterious charges; always confirm prices up front.
  4. Don’t go to unknown bars alone – Some clubs overcharge or threaten guests with violence if they don’t pay.
  5. Avoid ping-pong shows and sex shows in shady areas – Many are scams where you’ll be forced to pay huge bills for entry or drinks.
  6. Don’t give your credit card to bar staff – Always pay in cash or keep the card in sight when paying.
  7. Don’t assume ATMs are safe late at night – Use indoor ones at 7-Elevens or malls to avoid card skimming or theft.

🧠 Cultural & Social Respect

  1. Don’t insult or make fun of Thai people – Thai culture values politeness; aggressive or mocking behavior can escalate quickly.
  2. Avoid disrespecting the royal family – It’s illegal and considered deeply offensive.
  3. Don’t touch or try to flirt aggressively with bar girls or ladyboys – This can be misinterpreted or provoke a violent response.
  4. Don’t mock ladyboys (kathoey) – Transgender individuals are accepted in Thai culture, and mocking them can provoke fights or legal issues.
  5. Don’t assume friendliness = consent – Many nightlife workers are polite for business reasons, not because they’re interested.

🚫 Other Common Mistakes

  1. Avoid renting motorbikes drunk – It’s common but very dangerous and illegal. Accidents involving foreigners are frequent at night.
  2. Don’t assume every bar is safe – Some have criminal links or operate illegally. Stick to reputable establishments.
  3. Don’t skip travel insurance – Nightlife-related injuries, theft, or legal issues can get expensive fast.

Final Tip:

Stay aware, stay respectful, and trust your instincts. Thailand's nightlife can be incredible, but knowing where the lines are will keep your trip fun and trouble-free.
